Do You Treat Your Religion Like a Religion?

Do You Treat Your Religion Like a Religion?

We’ve all heard it, I’m sure: “So-n-so treats _____ like a religion!”

Do you treat your religion like a religion

You can fill in the blank with anything, but probably the most common one is football, or really any sport for that matter. Similarly, people often say someone does something “religiously.” Maybe that’s watching a weekly TV show.

Both of these situations have been on my mind lately as football season is now upon us and fall TV shows will be coming back soon. But what does it mean exactly?

Well, people who treat football like a religion think about the sport all the time. They study it by constantly reading countless articles about recruits and what each team is going to do differently in the next game. They talk about it on social media. And they talk about it in real life. I’m willing to bet, if you stick around almost any group of people for any period of time in the fall, the conversation will eventually turn to football.

Similarly, people who watch a certain TV show religiously do whatever they have to do to make sure they watch it every week. They don’t schedule any other events during that time. Or at least that’s how it was before TiVo. Now they make time in their schedule to watch the recording. They stop whatever they’re doing to watch because nothing is more important during that time. They talk about the show on social media and in real life. Just like football, you can hardly have a conversation these days without it eventually turning to a TV show of some kind.

Here’s my question though… Do you treat your religion like a religion? Do you attend worship services religiously?

Lets take a look. Do you think about Jesus all the time? How about studying God’s word daily? Do you talk about Christianity on social media? How often does it come up in real life? Do you make sure not to schedule other activities during worship times? Do you stop whatever you’re doing and attend worship, fellowship, and service opportunities because there is nothing more important during that time?

It’s something to think about isn’t it? And it seems kind of backwards. I know I’m guilty of not treating my religion like a religion sometimes. It will take a lot of work to change the mind set, but let’s work on it! What do you say?
