What I do is NOT My Passion

What I do is NOT My Passion

Recently, Pearson and I were hanging out with some friends and while the boys were grilling, I mentioned to the girls that I wanted to be a stay-at-home-mom. I talked about how I don’t care much about my job or my future career because I know it won’t be forever Don’t get me wrong, I love my job. It’s just not my number one priority like a career is for some people. It’s just not something I’m passionate about. And I even said that I chose my major in college with this in mind. Then one of the other girls said “So you went to Harding to get your MRS degree?” or something to that effect. This really upset me at first. She said there is nothing wrong with it, but I was a bit embarrassed.

On one of the infamous swings at Harding. The phrase “Three swings and a ring” rang true for a lot of students.

You see, Harding University was known by many as a marriage factory. It was a big joke that all the girls were only there to get their “MRS degree,” meaning they were just looking for a husband. I hated that. I thought going to college to find a husband was really stupid. And I technically didn’t find my husband in college, I found him in high school (but that’s a story you can find here). My thoughts (and words) were always against the mentality that women need a man in their lives. I went to school to get a real degree and education and if I had a man when I got out, great. And if not, great! But it is also true that the goal of eventually being a SAHM was always in the back of my mind.

Anyway, since that conversation with the girls, I’ve read several blog posts (like this one, this one, and this one) talking about being a SAHM and I feel much better about it. There is nothing wrong with wanting to stay home and pour yourself into your family. This is my passion. It’s what my soul wants. It’s what I truly feel I’ve been called to do. And that is fine. And it’s also fine for other women to want to work and make their way in the corporate world. Or for women to be passionate about health care or teaching our children in school. We need those women! It’s just not me.

No this post is not implying anything. We still have a long way to go before we start thinking about raising our own family. It’s just been on my heart lately and I wanted to share.

What do you think about SAHMs? Are you a SAHM? Do you ever feel like people look down on you or were you ever ashamed?
