This is my first time linking up with Amanda for “Tell Me About Your Town” and this month’s theme is “scenery/weather/climate” in honor of Earth Day tomorrow.
I don’t think it’s much of a secret that I basically hate Ohio winters. I was born and raised in Georgia and went to college in Arkansas. So when we decided to come to Ohio State for Pearson’s grad school, it was a bit of a shock. That first winter was brutal (and it was the most mild of the 3 winters we’ve lived here).
The first time it snowed, Pearson and I bundled up in our best southern winter gear and headed out to work on a snowman, throw snowballs at each other, and treat the snow like the rare delight we always knew it as. But we soon realized we were the ONLY people outside. And our apartment complex actually has a lot of kids. Why weren’t they outside playing in the awesomeness?? We then realized that snow in Ohio was over rated and annoying. Not fun.
Shortly after that, I bought a couple wool coats, wool socks, snow boots, and plenty of fleece lined leggings. I can actually walk around pretty comfortably in the snow now, but it’s a pain to put it all on every time I have to take Pip outside.
I do however appreciate the beauty of the snow (I just wish I didn’t have to walk around in it 3 or 4 times a day with a dog). Winter is typically a dreary time anyway as most of nature either dies off or hibernates and most people just stay inside, but the snow highlights God’s creation so beautifully. It’s a little ray of happiness in a time of seeming darkness.
After winter, I think we sort of skip spring usually. Well maybe we get a small spring but last year it snowed again on April 15th. Not only that, but I don’t have any allergies here in Ohio like I did in Georgia. That’s not spring to me. But I do like the showers and thunderstorms we get on occasion.
Summer is pleasant. Sometimes I wish it would get hotter and stay hotter longer so I could enjoy the pool and other summer activities, but I know I shouldn’t complain about not having scorching, Georgia temperatures. We went to a graduation cookout last year in the middle of may and I froze in jeans and a hoodie. In MAY! No thank you!
However, fall here is BEAUTIFUL. It may make up for all the things I hate about all the other seasons. The trees are gorgeous and stay colored for a long time in the crisp cool air. I love picking apples at Lynd’s fruit farm. There’s the incredible Circleville pumpkin festival. And all the wonderful sights like Hocking Hills are so much prettier in the fall. I’ve always loved fall but I do even more so now that we live in Columbus.
All in all, I’m glad to live here because of the people I’ve met. And there are so many fun things to do with the zoo, the Clippers, the Blue Jackets, Shakespeare in the Park, Cosi, and I could go on. I just wish it was a little warmer.
