Date Night: S’mores With “FirePots”

s'mores with fire pots

Yesterday was National Dessert Day and we celebrated with S’mores!

So a couple months ago ago, Amberly wrote a post for National S’mores Day (side note: Who else absolutely loves all these national holidays that seem to be popping up in the last few years?). Anyway, Amberly shared some date night ideas for National S’mores day, one of which was Bella’s DIY s’mores pot. I thought that was brilliant, so I tucked the idea away in my mind for another time.

A month or so later, the temperatures started getting cooler and I started craving s’mores, bonfires, camping and all sorts of things that go along with fall. But, as I’m sure you know, Pearson’s schedule is crazy and we don’t have time for… Well, we don’t have time for anything. And roasting marshmallows at a camp fire by yourself is, frankly, not fun.

So I remembered the s’mores pots! I thought those could be done simply enough if we ever get a free night. They don’t require a lot of planning like a camping trip does and the don’t require a house with a back yard and fire pit. So when I passed a s’mores stand at Kroger last week, I picked up the 3 important ingredients.

Then, earlier this week I went to Walmart and got their last couple terra cotta pots and some charcoal. Just to have on hand in case we would have the opportunity to make s’mores some time soon. I really wanted to get one pot about the size of both of these combined, but I suppose when you buy them this late, beggars can’t be choosers.

Last night, Pearson got home at about 9 pm. We were just sitting there talking and I said “Let’s do something! Something besides watching TV.” And I told him about the s’mores pots. He thought it was a great idea! Especially since it was national dessert day!
Okay so maybe I bought all the stuff while really really hoping he’d be on board to try it out this week and I might have suggested it no matter what time he got home. Soon, it will be too cold to enjoy anything outside. But I don’t want to think about that.

So anyway, I just lined the bottom of the pots with a little foil and we put a small piece of newspaper in each pot and topped that with 3 briquettes each. The flames were awesome, the crisp evening air was refreshing, and the marshmallows were roasted to perfection!
I decided to name the s’mores pots “FirePots.” Like a fire pit, but a pot instead. Don’t you think it fits?
Pearson, of course, had to play with the fire a little. He burned marshmallows just to see what they would do. He also set a few paper towels on fire and other various items. I will never understand.
The pictures of us, and really anything that wasn’t fire, didn’t turn out too well. I mean, it was like 9:30 or 10 pm at this point. So sue me. Actually, please don’t. But I thought a date night post would be weird without pictures of us so here you go.
It turned out to be a pretty fantastic date night. And the final product was quite delicious, if I may say so myself!
Here’s to making the best of the situation when your hubby works like 80 hours per week. And here’s to going to bed way too late every night because you want more time with him (or you at least want to see him before falling asleep)!
Have you ever made a fire pot to roast marshmallows on? Do you love s’mores and bonfires as much as I do?
Thanks for reading!
