When Your Primary Love Language Changes (#LoveBlog2017 – giveaway & linkup)

Happy Monday! I’m hosting #LoveBlog2017 again today and the prompt is “The Five Love Languages.” Check out Brita’s intro post to see all the prompts.

So I’m guessing most of you reading this have heard of The 5 Love Languages. The book was first published in 1990 but it seems to have picked up a lot of steam in the last five or ten years.

I’ve written about the love languages a lot. And now there are a lot more books including The Five Love Languages for Children, The Five Love Languages for Teenagers, The Five Love Languages for Singles, and more.

So the whole concept is that there are five different ways we each show love; Receiving Gifts, Acts of Service, Quality Time, Physical Touch, and Words of Affirmation. The catch is that we all favor one or two over the others. And often, we are opposite from our spouse in this aspect. This can lead to one spouse feeling very unloved while the other thinks they are showing love all the time. That’s why it’s important to know your spouse’s primary love language and to learn how to speak them all well.

And for that reason, there is a quiz! You can take the quiz to find out what your primary love language is and to get a little profile telling you about your primary love language. Pearson and I take the quiz every year because our love languages shift. And that is just natural. People change over time. Different stages of life bring different wants and needs.

And it seems I have an excuse to blog about our quiz results every February now with #LoveBlog! This year though, I’d like to also read the book again. I read it in February of 2014 with a marriage bloggers book club I was in. Well, I didn’t really read all of it. I read the chapters about the highest language on each of mine and Pearson’s lists. And I wrote a super long blog post about it. Anyway, we’ve both grown and changed and I’d like to read it again. The whole thing this time.

Anyway, so as I was saying, it’s only natural for your love languages to change. And that’s why it’s important to communicate when you’re not feeling loved or when you wish your spouse would show love in a certain way. That’s also why it’s important to pay attention to your spouse and pick up on how he or she is showing love. Maybe that’s how they’d like to receive love too. And lastly, it’s why it’s important to learn how to use all the languages.

Anyway, enough with my rambling. Let’s get to our results, shall we?

My scores / Pearson’s scores from 2014

My scores / Pearson’s scores from 2015

My scores / Pearson’s scores from 2016

My scores / Pearson’s scores from 2017

Interesting, right? Especially Pearson’s scores. I always thought Physical Touch was so important to him. Even recently. If he’s in a bad mood, usually I can cheer him up with a back scratch or massage. But, according to when we took the quiz a couple days ago, it’s moved down to the second to last spot. That doesn’t mean I’m going to stop touching him. But I am going to pay more attention to Quality Time and Acts of Service.
Have you ever read the book or taken the quiz? What’s your and your spouse’s primary love language? Write about it and link up below! Thanks for reading!
